Assessments can be used for external recruitment, internal promotions or pure development, often as a precursor to coaching. They begin by taking the time to fully understand the leadership context. This includes the critical requirements of the role, the nature of the team, style and preferences of key stakeholders and the wider organisational culture. Next comes a deep-dive to understand each leader's personality, preferences, values and underpinning psychology – not just who they are but why they have evolved this way. Potential is also key, it's not just about fit for a role and a business but also an evaluation of how far a leader can go, what their best future might hold and how they can be supported in achieving it. From a developmental point of view, there will always be a focus on filling the gaps in their leadership but where the highest yield comes from is helping leaders leverage their strengths to maximum effect. Assessment in isolation is a missed opportunity, so every engagement will have a strong development focus.
